Their love of freedom was illustrated in their resistance and courage during the Nazi domination of Norway during World War II. Since the war. the people of Norway have ably participated in the United Nations. and they have shared in the collective efforts of the free nations. The first group of Norwegian immigrants arrived in New York on October 9. 1825. Today approximately 1 million persons of Norwegian origin are in the United States. Nearly onefourth of that total number reside in my own State. and Minnesota can lay claim to having the largest number of citizens of Norwegian extraction of any State of the Union. * Americans of Norwegian descent have given much toward the things that make for a better life here in the United States.
