France. was invited to deliver a paper at the International Mathematical Congress at Harvard University. He spent many weary months awaiting his visa. which was finally granted to him. However. he was permitted to appear officially at no other university in this country. either to hear any lectures or to give any. If he wished to travel about. he was permitted to do so. only if he gave written notification of each change of address to immigration authorities. The noted professor delivered his paper at Harvard University. Then. disheartened by the extreme restrictions on his movements. returned immediately to France.
