I do not know the significance of immediate statehood for Hawaii. I do not think anyone in the Senate can measure the ultimate significance of it. We may find in future years that what we have done for the people of Hawaii and Alaska in granting them statehood has been the greatest single contribution we have made in reaching out to the Asiatic peoples. who may be a little displeased now with some of our conduct. I wish to say to the distinguished Senator from Mississippi . who today spoke about trouble in another part of the world. that it may be unnecessary to send so many soldiers to foreign battlefields if we persuade the people of the earth that our great Nation does desire to treat all people fairly. and that we shall vote for statehood for those who have demonstrated that they deserve it. I hope that the Senate will vote for statehood for Hawaii and Alaska. and thus bind these Territories to us in "aspirations. in illusions. in hope. in fear. which binds men to each other. which binds together all humanity. the dead to the living. and the living to the unborn."
