I demanded that in all fairness to Mexico and the officials of our own country. the Senator from New York give us what evidence he had in support of the charges. The only evidence cited by the Senator from New York was a statement alleged to have been made last year in the testimony of Col. Benjamin G. Habberton. Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. before the Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations of the House of Representatives. I have taken up this matter with Mr. Habberton. and have been assured by him that the statement attributed to him was not correctly interpreted by the Senator from New York.
