I thank the Senator. Very rigid standards and requirements have been established under the McCarranWalter Act. covering immigration to the United States. As Senators know. I have been critical of many provisions of that act. which I think are unduly harsh. inhumane. unworkable. and contrary to the best interests of the United States in our relations with other countries. But. at most. those immigrants are entering the United States legally. after screening. I hope the distinguished Senator from Vermont. the chairman of the committee. will listen to my statement about this matter. During the present calendar year. approximately 100.000 immigrants. carefully screened. will come into the United States. I think that in many cases. as I have said. they will be hypercritically screened. We seek to exclude anyone who has the slightest taint of any subversive organization. either by association or by connection.
