No one was permitted to bring food or water to the unfortunates. Those who cried out were shot down. For 21/2 days the Lithuanians were forced to witness the suffering of their friends and relatives. then the cars moved off to Siberia and prison camps. On his bicycle Father Znotenas skirted a procession of 15 to 20 miles long of refugees in cars and carts. The Russians parachuted on them from the air and charged them with tanks. The priest escaped into Germany where he found refuge in a Franciscan convent. from there to Switzerland. and finally as a DP. he came to the United States.
