Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830117690

Mr. President. I remember it was stated that so far as refugees were concerned. under the system which has been in effect many undesirable persons were coming into this country. The Governments of Canada. Australia. and some other nations sent their own representatives to Europe and selected the refugees they wanted. and they were highly pleased with the type of persons they obtained. The Senator from North Dakota said the matter had heretofore been turned over to some organization which was of a private nature. and that as a result a very poor selection was made. He said it was his intention to see that we had our own inspectors handling our own business in our own way so that we could get the kind of persons who would make good American citizens.
