According to an Overseas Economic Survey published in 1951 the island of San Miguel with a total population of 150.000 people has 15.000 totally unemployed but employable people with a larger number suffering from partial unemployment. I can assure you that such unemployment does not arise from a lack of energy. I have many people in my district who are immigrants from the Azores Islands. Almost without exception they are extraordinarily lawabiding and industrious. I am certain that the same compliment can be given to all people of Portuguese descent regardless of the area of origin. My amendment seeks only equality of treatment in this legislation. Issue has been raised as to the possibility of creating problems of security by the admission of a large group of immigrants. You need have no fear for security with the admission to the United States of the immigrants to whom I specifically address my remarks. To the best of my knowledge I have never met a person of Portuguese descent who belonged to the Communist Party or other subversive party or group in the United States or to any front thereof. More particularly I have never heard of a Communist Party front constituted in the name of a Portuguese ethnic group.
