Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100546

But it is not an obligation to these people. It is an obligation to ourselves. to the principles for which we. as a Nation. stand. In passing this bill we reaffirm our faith in democracy and in humanity. President Eisenhower sees the rescue of these people as an "obligation of the free world." He does not suggest. nor do I. that the United States carry the full burden of the millions of refugees now in Western Europe. The truth is. we have not been asked to do that. Australia and New Zealand have been very generous in taking in these people.
