Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100517

I was one of the sponsors of the original displaced persons legislation in the House and vigorously worked. for its enactment. I have never regretted my efforts toward that accomplishment. If we believe foreign friendly nations are important to us we owe it to ourselves to make this further contribution to solution of their overpopulation and refugee problem. As the President has indicated the problem has been greatly complicated by the current steady flow of refugees and escapees from behind the Iron Curtainpeople searching desperately for freedom who look to the free world for a haven of safety from persecution and death. In these circumstances I am in full agreement with the President that we must assume our just share of the responsibility of providing asylum for these desperate men. women. and children who face certain annihilation if they again fall into the hands .of the enemy barbarians. Again I wish to emphasize that the adoption of this bill will inspire reassuring faith that the most materially wealthy country on the globe also has the capacity to extend the moral leadership a questioning world so urgently requires. As a nation of immigrants and the sons of immigrants passage of this measure is in accord with the best traditions and ideals of this blessed United States.
