Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100516

Americans must start looking out for Americans. Much has been said about the economic and social strife allegedly rampant in the "overpopulated" areas of Western Europe. On the other hand. little has been said about the economic and social impact which these additional immigrants would have on our own domestic economy. True. the bill provides that an American citizen must make an affidavit that none of the immigrants will displace an American employee from his job. that none of them will displace an American employee from proper housing. and that none of them will become a public charge. These provisions might operate effectively for the first day. for the first week. for the first month or even for the first year. But sooner or later. irrespective of written prohibitions. 240.000 additional people in the United States will cause a serious displacement in the economic realm of the American workingman.
