Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100475

Speaker. I am for this bill. I represent a district where a great percentage of the population within the last several generations were immigrants. Judge Gary. former chairman of the Board of United States Steel made this statement in a speech in Gary. Ind.. after World War I. He said: The success of World War I armament production was brought about largely by immigrants who came to our shores from across the ocean. They contributed greatly toward our victory. The sons of these immigrants carried on the production work in that great industrial area and contributed greatly to win World War II. We hear statements that this legislation is going to let down the floodgate to Communists. Only yesterday I attended a luncheon in the Capitol dining room where a few Congressmen were hosts to the young Polish boy who escaped from Poland.
