Mr. President. I do that at this time because within the next day or soeither today or tomorrowthere will come before the Senate what is known as the Refugee Act. Copies of it are now on the desks of Senators. One of these items relates to Australia. and recounts how the Minister for Immigration of that Commonwealth has appealed to the United States to assist in settling migrants in countries outside America. indicating that American assistance would be necessary if the Australian intake of immigrants was to be enlarged. and stating that whereas Australia absorbed 127.000 migrants from all sources in 1952. the intake in 1953 has been limited to 80.000 "to ensure that the migration scheme would not get out of balance." The other item to which I refer. Mr. President. concerns Southern Rhodesia. and states thatIn order to reduce the rate of immigration to manageable proportions. geographical quotas were introduced in May 1952And asserts that immigration control isnecessary. not only to secure more orderly development. but also to fight Inflation. Mr. President.
