The gap left in the leadership of the Democratic Party will be hard to fill. The Nation grieves for a public servant who never forgot his humble origin and who sacrificed himself for the people because he had such faith in them and such affection for them. Starting from the bottom. as a son of Immigrant parents. and as a newsboy. he fought his way up the ladder of success by dint of hard and honest work that brought him recognition in the highest councils of the Nation. He never sought wealth or power to assure himself of his superiority over other men as some do. Maurice Tobin had a nobler objectivethat of dedicating his life to constructive service in behalf of his fellow men.
