Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830085678

Mr. President. it would be foolish for me to state that there is not a single criminal among the millions of persons who have fled from behind the Iron Curtain. It is regrettable. however. that the escapee and refugee report submitted by the Senate Subcommittee. of which I was a member. is being so perverted by the Soviet propaganda machine as to make it appear that the United States Senate. or any segment thereof. subscribes to the view that those who fight for freedom in our modern day are criminals and subversives. We recognize that the vast majority of these people are the patriots of our day. and we shall do everything we can to assist them in achieving the freedom and liberty they seek. The Soviet propaganda machines slander of these courageous people is a sign of the desperation of evil men.
