Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830074737

Mr. President. I have previously commented on the Senate floor on the need for constructive action on the Presidents request for emergency immigration legislation. It is clear that everybody here is in favor of taking advantage of the boiling caldron of hatred behind the Iron Curtain. Everybody is in favor of making the lot of the Soviet enslavers as difficult as possible. But how can we do so. if we slam the door in the face of the escapees? How can we do so if we wreck the hopes of all those who may wish to desert the Soviet and satellite armies but who. under present conditions. have no chance of emigrating from the immediate danger zone. even if they should get across the barbed wire Communist borders? So. it is my earnest hope. that after the July 8th meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee. S. 1917 will be reported to the floor for immediate action.
