Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830073497

Following the Presidents request. the Senator from Utah introduced Senate bill 1917. a bill to admit an extra 240.000 European immigrants. many of whom have fled from Soviet tyranny. This bill deserves the immediate attention of the Senate. There is no valid reason for postponing full Senate consideration of the Watkins bill beyond this session of Congress. On the contrary. foreign policy considerations as well as humanitarian interests demand that those suffering under Communist tyranny know that they have a haven to which they can come. I urge my colleagues to back President Eisenhower by giving this measure their full support.
