Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830059704

All nationalities. all races. have united in merging together the best traditions. the finest qualities of national and racial character. into what we know as Americana It serves a useful purpose to keep reminding each succeeding generation of our countrymen of the share -in our glorious history. not only of the country and the race of our own ancestry. but as well of those of all other Americans. No nationalistic segment of our population has more justification for pride in its contribution to our countrys past than that of Swedish blood. I earnestly urge the joint effort of all the Members of this body in support of this bill embodying the thou ght of an immigrant boy from Sweden. returning to his native land to be graduated from a great Swedish college. and then coming again to our shores to give a lifetime of service advancing those ideals which are the common possession of the people of Sweden and the people of the United States. The bill which I have introduced merely provides for the creation of a commission to submit a plan for the monument. I appreciate that at the present time.when the expenditures for defense are so. heavy and economy is so necessary. the House would not feel justified in authorizing expenditures not of an essential nature.
