Mr. Speaker. this week the State of New York and the Nation lost one of its most dedicated public servants. our beloved Robert F. Wagner. Senator Wagner represents the American dream. the American ideal. He was an immigrant to our shores who in his all too short life endowed this Nation with the benefit of his wisdom. kindliness. energy. and spirit. Senator Wagner came to this country at the age of 8. having been born in Hessen. Germany. He could neither speak English nor did he know anything of the customs of this country. He started in the public schools of New York City to learn our language.
