Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830037799

President. unfortunately. I was unable to be present last week when the senior Senator from Michigan . with the senior Senator from New York and my colleague. the junior Senator from New Jersey introduced. in line with President Eisenhowers request. S. 1746. a bill to assist in alleviating the current immigration and refugee problem by providing for the issuance of 240.000 special immigrant visas during fiscal years 1953 and 1954. Ever since I first visited the displaced persons camps in 1947. I have been keenly aware of the deep yearning of many people in the satellite countries of eastern Europe for freedom and independence.
