Speech #830033734

Mr. President. on behalf of myself. and the Senator from New Jersey . I introduce for appropriate reference a bill to assist in relieving the current immigration and refugee problem by providing for the issuance of 240.000 special immigrant visas during the 2 fiscal years commencing July 1. 1953. and July 1. The bill will enable the United States to discharge its humanitarian responsibility to the homeless refugees of Europe. Many of the people of East Germany. Poland. Hungary. Rumania. Bulgaria. Czechoslovakia. and the Baltic States. have been forced to flee their homelands and break through the Iron Curtain because of the enslavement and terror visited on their homes by the Communists.
