Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830028859

That became the generous and heartwarming extended to all the Jewish victims of oppression by the young republic. This ingathering of exiles cheered by the world. It was like the hope that beckoned to all the poor and persecuted in generations past when the United States had a liberal immigration policy. The early settlers in Israel could have been selfish. They could have said: "We were the pioneers. Let us get established first. Bar immigration for awhile. If you open the floodgates and allow refugees to pour in before the country is able to absorb them. the burden will be thrown on our shoulders. We will have to share what little we have. It will force us to start all.over again." The people already on the scene did not reckon in terms of priority. they did not think of their own convenience first.
