Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830026045

I think this legislation in itself affords some measure of protection against the entrance of subversives along the Mexican border. in that all the testimony before our committee was to the effect that since this legislation had been in existence. whereby workers could come into this country lawfully. there have not been as many illegal entries as might have been anticipated otherwise. This. of course. does not deal with the immigration situation. We did not attempt to go into that at all. We have no jurisdiction over that matter. That jurisdiction belongs to the gentlemans committee. Certainly the testimony before our committee was that this legislation has lessened the possibility of subversives coming into the United States along the Mexican border.
