Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830000791

I am sure that the American people are overwhelmingly opposed to nazism and fascism as well as communism. For a generation now our country has happily been free of the Nazi virus. We should not import the seed of future dissension by permitting indiscriminate emigration of former Nazis to this country. Since the McCarran law permits them to come in it should be repealed for that reason. as well as for its discriminatory provisions against other peoples who do believe in our ideals and traditions of freedom. A new bill should be written with a central theme of welcoming those people who have in the past aided in the building of a greater and better America and at the same time excluding Communists. Nazis. and all those who. by their acts or convictions. seek to destroy our great democracy. My bill is designed to restore our immigration legislation to its status before December 24. 1952. until such time as our Judiciary Committees report. and the Congress enacts. a new and equitable immigration bill.
