Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820245091

But on the other hand. the worst tragedy that could happen for free people everywhere would be the weakening of the economic or political structure of the United States. This has been the motivating thought of those who have devoted themselves to the preparation of this legislation. I sincerely believe its passage will be decidedly in the interests of our people and our country. Just as sincerely do I feel that failure to enact this legislation would deprive our Government for many years to come. of the benefits of a liberalized immigration system such as is provided in this bill. Its provisions may not all be perfect. some may not prove workable in practice. Only time can tell.
