Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820244836

In these crucial days. it is worth while to stop for a moment and reflect upon the direction in which we are heading. et us remember that even in the worst crisis faced by the American people in the past. they never backed down on their democratic principles and beliefs. Ours is a government of laws. rather than of men. Our liberties and our way of life must be protected through laws. rather than by dictators. The McCarranWalter Immigration bill is a step in the direction of dictatorship and police methods. As such. it is contrary to American ideals. principles and traditions. I am happy once again to cast my vote against this bill and I urge all my colleagues to uphold the Presidents action.
