I decline to yield until I have answered my distinguished colleague from Iowa. I shall then be very glad indeed to answer my colleague from Nevada. I have taken the position consistently from the startand I took this position long before I came to the Senatethat if a person were in this country illegally and could be shown to be here illegally. he should be deported. after he has been given a fair hearing and a fair trial on the charges or accusations made against him. I do not believe that any agency of the Government should have the power to go into homes and seize and deport men without a fair trial. without compliance with our judicial procedure. But. when a trial has been had. when the test has been made. and the facts justify. I certainly favor deportation. In the instant case. the immigrants certainly have made no effort whatever to come into this country under the agreement which we have with the Mexican Government. permitting the entry of many thousands of personsI do not recall the numberunder the protection and supervision of our Government and that of the Mexican Government. with the idea that they should be returned at the conclusion of their employment or service. With respect to the 700.000 socalled wetbacks. who enter this country clandestinely. even when they are shown to have entered illegally. I do not want to deprive them of their rights to defend themselves. any more than I would want to deprive anyone else of such rights.
