Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820216615

Mr. JAVITs. and the others who have expressed their opposition to these two amendments because I believe they will seriously interfere with a wellordered plan to give assistance to Jewish refugees in Israel and thereby help that new nation to strengthen itself among the family of free nations. Israels strength is a definite asset to the security of the free world. I believe the proposals in the mutual security bill providing for the relief and resettlement of refugees in Israel. and for technical assistance in Israel are sound and I hope the House will follow the recommendations of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. We should reject these two amendments cutting the program and I urge my colleagues to do so. I believe the program as approved by the committee is justified by the urgent needs of the people themselves. the reresults that can be achieved and the strategic importance of Israel in the area.
