Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820216576

Mr. Chairman. the amendments would reduce appropriations already inadequate. The refugee problem being handled by Israel would tax the patience. strength. and ingenuity of a much larger and older nation. It is a problem which we must help solve. Failure to do so would be an act of selfishness and blind folly unworthy of a great Nation. unworthy of the great people of the United States whom we are here to represent. I think the people of the Nation want and expect us to help this friendly democracy. which is struggling to integrate hundreds of thousands of unfortunate refugees into its economy and social and political system. When in history has such a new Nation ever achieved so much in the face of such obstacles? When have any people ever demonstrated more fortitude. generosity. or determination?
