Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820214957

I am sure the members of the committee had the best intentions in the world when they brought forth Senate bill 2550. They merely followed the same groove and pattern which had been set under the 1924 act. which was discriminatory against persons from southern and eastern Europe. These folks have greater difficulties with the American language than do the English and the Irish. But the children of the people from Southern and Eastern Europe learn the American language. and they contribute to America as noble and precious things as do the children of other immigrants. My city of Chicago is really a league of nations. I know the various nationality groups very well.
