Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820214205

I say I am unable to understand the fear which seems to make us tremble at the thought that people of the same strains which have already achieved success here will somehow damage us. Ninetynine percent of those who would come into this country are seeking only an opportunity to prosper and to promote economic and political liberty in the United States. Day after day we pick up the newspapers and read accounts of sports events. How is it possible for any person who is interested in baseball or football to be afraid of people from areas upon which we impose these rigid restrictions on immigration? I do not know what the Irish teams of Notre Dame would do without Poles. Italians.
