Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820211838

I realize that. But the growth was at that time very great. We were in those years admitting somewhere between 700.000 and 1.000.000 immigrants a year. The claim has been made that by increasing the number admissible at this time. we may cause an economic dislocation. We are proposing to admit onesixth of 1 percent. so it will take 30 years for the population of the country to increase. through immigration. 5 percent. That is a whole generation. Certainly there can be no economic dislocation over a substantial period of time under those figures. If there should arise a situation similar to that in 1930. when the great depression occurred. as the Senator from Illinois has pointed out. immigration could be slowed up.
