Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810185803

The practice was that such persons were stopped. and the files were sent back to the Displaced Persons Commission. The authority resides in the Displaced Persons Commission. The authority is not in the consular service. nor in the Immigration Service. The authority and power are in the Displaced Persons Commission to overrule them. and that Is what was done. That Is why the bill provides that the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the consular service shall also have veto power. Why there should be any argument. any controversy about giving the consular service and the Immigration Service. whose officers and employees are trained in immigration work. the veto power to protect the country. is beyond my comprehension. Yet that is the second of two big issues in the bill.
