Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810184762

I have been sitting on the Appropriations Committee recently. while the committee has been considering the appropriations for the State Department. In the committee we have gone into this matter with a very finetooth comb. I understand that a displaced person must thus go through three -creenings. first. by the Displaced Persons Commission. which considers the persons eligibility as a displaced person. next. if he passes that test. his name is sent to the Consular office. and there he is screened by the Consular office. next. he is also screened by the Immigration Service. Furthermore. Mr. Miller. of the Immigration Service. I believe. tells us that even after a displaced person gets aboard ship. to sail to the United States. if anything undesirable develops in his case. he is stopped. and a further screening is made.
