Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810159370

He was the child of poverty and he remained in this Chamber throughout his life the champion of the oppressed. When In this Chamber the matter of slum clearance was being discussed I watched the play of expression on the face of MARTIN GORSI. I saw the gleam of happiness in his eyes when that bill to clear the slums and the bill for public housing was passed. because that marked another triumph in the achievements of this Immigrant boy who had given his life to making his adopted country a richer and a finer place in which to live. I cannot speak at greater length because the grief that I feel Is filling my eyes with tears and is closing my voice. I now yield to the gentleman from Illinois .
