Speech #810154604

President. my time is limited. under the agreement. of course. So I would prefer to be permitted to complete my remarks before I yield. In the second place. this bill should be considered from the standpoint of its effect upon the financial burden which the United States has assumed in connection with our participation in the International Refugee Organization. This international organization is charged with the care and maintenance and resettlement of displaced persons and refugees. and between the close of World War II and June 30. 1949. our Government will have spent approximately $141.800.000 as its share in the cost of the IRO. By June 30. 1950. when the IRO is expected to have completed its mission. we shall have spent an estimated total of $212.230.000 for this purpose. On the 31st day of last July there were still 360.513 displaced persons receiving care and maintenance in camps in Germany.
