Capable. sincere. and patriotic men. some in the United States Embassy in Moscow. and others on the ground in China. attempted to warn our Government against the policy we were pursuing. but their comments were ignored. In the case of General Wedemeyer. his statement was not only ignored. it was suppressed from September 19. 1947. until the issuance of the white paper. In reviewing the statements In the white paper. and other records bearing on our Asiatic policy of the last two decades. I gain the distinct impression that the welfare and best interests of the United States were subordinated time and again. and in the face of competent advice to the contrary. to the interests of some sort of ideology which perhaps can be simplest described as the illusion of a worldwide brotherhood of mankind under a common philosophy and a common government. The people who objected to the Chiang Government ignored the fact that the alternative was a Russiandominated Chinese Communist regime.
