Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810083361

We have a form of government that permits the poor boy of today. the hired man. the farm hand. if you please. to become the home owner and successful man of tomorrow. It is a form of government that permitted the able Senator from Florida. who. as he said a moment ago. was born on a 129acre farm to reach the high position he now occupies. I was born on a 40acre farm in Indiana. and my father was a farm hand. so I say a form of government that permits the farm hand of today to become the farm owner of tomorrow. a form of government that permits the poor Immigrant of today to become the successful citizen of tomorrow should be cherished. upheld. and maintained. In passing let me Inquire who In America was not once a poor immigrant himself or had ancestors who were poor immigrants? The only difference among Americans Is the number of days since either they themselves or their fathers or grandfathers or greatgrandfathers or greatgreatgrandfathers came to this country. That is the only difference between one American and another.
