Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810076469

Chairman. I rise in support of the amendment. I dislike very much to be placed in the position of being opposed to the stand taken by the chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary. but I do believe it would be a very fine thing if the first act done on American soil by the new immigrants would be the taking of the oath provided for in the amendment offered by the gentleman from Georgia. The balance of the amendment adds nothing to the law. As a matter of fact. the immigration laws are very plain as to the ability and the power of the Attorney General to deport subversives. and we are trying right now to do more about It. Under this amendment the very first act to be done officially by these displaced persons after they reach the United States would be to take the oath that they were not members of the. Communist Party.
