Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810059254

This was reported to us by many people. both in business and government. We were informed that on St. Thomas most of the house servants. hotel workers. and those required to do the dirtiest and hardest labor were immigrants from the British West Indies. A small spotcheck of our own indicated this to be true. Tortolans and others have sought to enter the Virgin Islands because of the demand for their services. Until recent years this immigration was winked at by United States authorities. At the present time it has been discontinued. We have on file several letters stating that. while a certain amount of unemployment and relief work exists in the city. it is next to impossible to obtain farm labor.
