Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810043827

Mr. President. I should like to say. further. by way of explanation to the distinguished Senator from Georgia. that the Department of Justice has always had the right to suspend deportations. We put a limitation on that right of suspension. providing that the suspensions when made by the Department of Justice must be submitted to the Congress. These bills come to the Committee on the Judiciary under the Reorganization Act. The names of the suspended aliens are screened by the staff and by the Committee on the Judiciary. and in many instances we refuse to go along with the Department of Justice.
