Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810013145

I feel strongly that this amendment should be defeated. I recognize the hardship in the individual cases of which the author of the amendment speaks the same as I recognize the hardship in the cases involving Chinese and Filipinos. But I am sure that if the gentleman will go to his own Jamaican immigrants. or the people from the West Indian Archipelago areas and explain to them the total situation. they will see that exactly what the bill does is to remove a historic injustice. and for the first time since 1924. make every human being on earth equal with other human beings under the laws of the United States with respect to immigration and naturalization.
