Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810013123

Mr. Chairman. the arguments made in support of the amendment before the change was made are equally applicable to the amendment as modified. The situation has not been changed by the change of the place in this bill where the amendment is to be inserted. In other words. the amendment as it now reads prevents discrimination against Negro immigration from the West Indies. So if we want to adhere to the alleged spirit of the bill. to remove discrimination with respect to citzenship b2cause of race. color. or creed. let us adopt this amendment and thereby remove that language from this bill. which is intended. and I repeat Intended to. and will discriminate against the Negro people in the British West Indies and the Negro people in the United States.
