Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800210533

We had set in the Fellows bill a cutoff date as of April 21. 1947. you must remember that the cutoff date December 22. 1945 was only a few months after the shooting stopped and there were 8.000.000 people wandering hither and tither with no place to rest their weary heads and there was no developed procedure in the camps. there were no records. There was naught but confusion. The date April 21. 1947. was the date the camps were ordered closed by General Clay with agreement of the International Refugee Organization. It is utterly impossible to enforce and administer this bill as envisaged by this conference report if you use the cutoff date of December 21. 1945. Furthermore you deliberately proscribe Jews.
