Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800199705

Our Government is presently spending at the rate of $130.000.000 a year to maintain the camps where these displaced persons are located. Our officials in charge of the problem do not seem to be able to get out from under this responsibility that we assumed after the war was over. It is a tough problem. If the legislation is not approved the immigration problem will be more difficult. There will be less screening and selection than under this legislation. The bill provides that the principle of na7 tional origin expressed in the quota system is not to be destroyed. It provides safeguards against subversives. The selection and screening should further protect our country in this regard.
