Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800199611

Mr. Chairman. we all know that this bill is a compromise between the proponents of the Stratton measure to admit 400.000 DPs. and those who want to keep our immigration barriers up. To me it appears to be a surrender to certain selfish minority pressure groups in this country. It is noth-. ing more or less than an. opening wedge driven at the very heart of our immigration laws. and I believe that if we continue to pass such measures it can possibly mean the eventual destruction of the United States. I had always entertained the idea that it was the duty of the Congress of the United States to legislate for the welfare of the American people. And yet not one time during the entire 2 days debate on this bill have I heard one single Member take this floor and attempt even to make an effort to show that this bill was. even by the farthest stretch of the imagination. in the interest of the American people.
