Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800199376

I do not know whether I am entitled to be heard because I have talked a lot on this bill. but I do think this is a very important question. The gentleman has presented this in a way that would make you feel you should give these people special recognition. but that is not the point. This bill was brought to the floor of this House because we felt that. without interfering with or striking out our present immigration system. we should solve a problem. and that problem is the displacedpersons problem in Europe. I can recognize that these men are just exactly what the gentleman from Connecticut says they area fine group of people who fought on our side and no doubt would make fine citizens. But the important reason for bringing in a bill like this. of course. is to relieve the people over there in these camps. which have sometimes been called "concentration camps." They have no place to go. and no country where freedom is recognized.
