Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800198405

Mr. Chairman. I consider it a simple moral duty to rise in support of the serious intent and purpose of this proposed legislation to establish a fair. just. adequate basis for the selection and admission of displacedpersons immigrants. I earnestly hope that. before debate concludes. provisions will be adopted for equitable recognition for those courageous underground allies and the brave men. such as the stalwart members of the Polish Second Army at Cassino. who fought side by side with our own forces in the common cause against dictatorship. In squarely facing our rightful obligation to assume a just share of the responsibility to solve the whole problem of displaced persons and war refugees. in my opinion. there are four courses which might be pursued. One is to let these distressed people. who have suffered so many and such terrible hardships through no fault of their own. stay forever in these semiconcentration camps. at a cost of $300.000.000 a year to the American taxpayer. Another is to abandon them to starvation.
