America has lost none of her great character or her high purpose or her generous sentiments"? Mr. President. I realize there are some who think that immigration is a menace to this country. I. of course. respect their sentiments. but I do not agree with their conclusions. There are some who think immigrants will mean fewer jobs for the employed in this country. I happen to have some figures here which I think indicate the contrary. In 1880 there was an increase of 24.8 percent in the population of the United States. but the gainfully employed in America increased 30.7 percent. an increase of 6 percent greater than the increase in population.
