Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800189760

Mr. President. I am sorry that I cannot agree with the position taken by the distinguished and able Senator from New Mexico. In my judgment. this amendment is a bad one. which. in a most unwarranted way. would interfere with the functioning of the immigration laws of the United States. I think it would be a great mistake for the Senate to adopt the amendment as a part of its worthy effort to take care of the displaced persons problem in a reasonable and equitable manner. Mr. President. before the amendment to the amendment was made a few minutes ago by the distinguished Senator from Connecticut . it would have been the case that the amendment would have added 15.000 to the 200.000 persons provided for under the law.
